Biography

A pharmacist, Edward Z. Gross was born in Harrisburg, November 6, 1851. He was a son of Daniel and Elizabeth Kunkel Gross, and received his education in the private schools of Harrisburg and the academies taught by Gause and Seiler, and the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy. He started working at his father's drug store at 16. He served as school director for one term, and was manager of the City hospital and member of the advisory board of the Children's Industrial Home. He was also a member of Harrisburg's Pine Street Presbyterian Church, where he was an elder, a leader of the choir, and a superintendent of the infant department of the Sabbath-school.

He married in Harrisburg on May 18, 1876 to Nancy J. Criswell, daughter of Vance and Hannah (Dull) Criswell. They had two children, Hannah and Henry.

There are no documents relating to Edward Z. Gross in the McCormick papers, and no photos, outside of the group photo taken in the rose garden, which features his likeness above.
