Nestled on the east bank of the Susquehanna river, in South-Central
Pennsylvania, Harrisburg is a city of many facets. As its sprawling,
Italian Renaissance-style capital building suggests, Harrisburg is the
capital of Pennsylvania and serves as that state's political nerve center;
but Harrisburg also houses a thriving arts and business community, as
well as the picturesque views of a small Pennsylvania river town.
Settled by Native Americans by 3000 BC, and by Europeans circa 1710,
Harrisburg was incorporated as a Borough in 1791 and declared a City
in 1860. Now home to approximately 53,000, Harrisburg is the geographic
and urban center of the metropolitan area that includes Dauphin, Cumberland,
Perry, and Lebanon counties.
The McCormick family that settled in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania were
of Scotch-Irish lineage; their ancestors emigrated to America sometime
after the siege of the city of Londonderry, Ireland in 1689. Making
their home in and near Pennsylvania's capital city, the McCormicks soon
distinguished themselves as prominent citizens, philanthropists, politicians,
servicemen, and businessmen (see family
history for a more detailed biographical sketch).
